Fitting a new boiler to your existing central heating system?

Maintaining a healthy central heating system is important for many different reasons. If fitting a new boiler to an existing system, Manufacturers Benchmark scheme requires that the system be thoroughly cleansed to British Standard BS7593. At present best industry practice is considered to be to Power Flush the system.

When commissioning new systems a PowerFlush is recommended. This will clean out flux residues, any excess jointing compounds, mineral oil and other contaminants and debris that can be found in the system following installation. Any of these can adversely affect the performance of the system or lead to component failure.

The new generation of Modern efficient boilers generally have much smaller parts than older models. For example, the passageway diameter in boiler heat exchangers can now be as narrow as 1mm, traditionally they could be up to 1cm. Although they bring great advantages in efficiency and fuel economy with them the problem is that anything that blocks them can invalidate the manufacturers warranty. If you have debris floating around in your existing system, which is virtually inevitable, this can block the pipes in your new boiler...

Are your fuel bills higher than expected?

Fuel bills are high enough without throwing your money away running an inefficient central heating system.

Power Flushing your central heating system will remove sludge and debris, adding inhibitors will protect your system going forward, and will ensure the efficient operation of your system. An efficient heating system will save you money on your household bills.

The owner of a flat that we power flushed in North London told us in a follow up phone call that she can't believe how quickly her flat heats up now since we completed the work!

Frequently asked questions:

What causes cold spots on radiators? Radiator cold spots indicate a build-up of black sludge sediment. This restricts water flow and reduces heat. In the summer when the heating system is not used so much this sludge settles to the bottom of the radiator and can solidify, causing further problems

What might cause a noisy boiler? The levels of boiler noise can increases in frequency and intensity when deposits of sludge and scale build up in an unprotected boiler. When fitting a new boiler to an existing system it is essential that the system be power flushed otherwise you could invalidate your boiler manufacturers warranty. A noisy boiler is an inefficient boiler, and is probably wasting much of your heating bill. Black oxide sludge, a bye product of oxidisation inside your radiators

Why are my radiators cold at the top? When the top of a radiator is cold during operation this is caused by either trapped air or hydrogen. Hydrogen gas builds up as a by-product of electrolytic corrosion (the insides of your radiators rusting, also called black oxide sludge) and is flammable. Be very careful if venting (bleeding) radiators and always exercise due caution

Why do I get dirty or black water when bleeding my radiators? Dirty, brown or black water when bleeding a radiator confirms that the system has experienced corrosion and that black sludge sediment has built up. The system should be power flushed and a chemical inhibitor added to minimise corrosion going forward to ensure that you get the best performance from your system and prolong its lifespan
