Hints & Tips to help you save money:

Top Tip: It is important that you know where the stop cock is located in your home. This is used to turn off the water supply to the house. In new builds and modern homes it is usually, although not always, found under the kitchen sink. In older properties it can be in the basement, or even outside under a small metal cover. If you don't know where it is make a point of finding it now, being able to turn the water off instantly in case of a leak can literally save you ££'s - once located make sure its working, it should turn easily.

Top 10 tips:

  1. Have any dripping taps or overflows fixed because a gentle trickle of water can freeze and block the pipe
  2. Ensure that your external and internal stop taps are working - if you don't know where they are try and find out, this will save time in an emergency if you have to turn your water supply off
  3. Ensure that exposed pipes and pipes in cold areas (attics, outbuildings, garages) are well insulated
  4. Use waterproof insulation on all pipes exposed to the elements and make sure that it is kept dry because wet lagging is useless
  5. Insulate any outside taps or alternatively turn them off at the stop tap
  6. Have your central heating system is serviced regularly, at least once every 12 months
  7. If you are leaving your property empty for a while leave your heating on low. If your heating system can run safely with the cold water switched off, turn off the stop tap and drain the system
  8. Don’t put insulation underneath storage tanks in the attic
  9. Open the attic hatch in freezing weather to allow warm air to circulate in the roof space
  10. keep your plumber’s contact details handy in case of an emergency
